Fundamentals of Digital Art Animation for Young Artists

In this fun and engaging class, grade 4 students and above will be introduced to the fundamentals of digital drawing and animation. Using beginner-friendly software and tools, students will learn the basics of sketching, coloring, layering, and simple animation techniques. As they build their skills, students will explore creative drawing themes such as nature, animals, food, people, and more. Students will also have the chance to socialize and connect with their peers, sharing ideas and feedback as they bond over a shared interest in digital art and creativity.

  • Develop a simple animated sequence using basic motion principles (squash and stretch)

  • Express creativity and storytelling through visual art

  • Build a small portfolio of digital artwork to share or continue developing


Materials Needed

  • iPad or touchscreen tablet
  • Drawing stylus (e.g. Apple pencil)
  • ibis Paint X App (Free, available on Apple and Android devices)

Class Structure

  1. Check-In – A warm welcome to start the session

  2. Introduction – A brief lesson on one core digital art animation principle

  3. Guided Practice – Students follow a step-by-step demonstration with the instructor, creating alongside them.

  4. Independent Work – Students work on their own animations, ask questions, and collaborate or chat with peers.

  5. Art Sharing – Students are invited to showcase their work and receive positive, constructive feedback from the instructor and classmates.


Participation Tips

To create a focused and supportive learning environment, students are encouraged to actively participate during guided practice. They’ll have the opportunity to share their animations for feedback, ask questions, and engage in creative discussions. For larger classes, microphones will remain muted during instruction to minimize distractions. Students can use the “raise hand” feature or chat to ask questions or share ideas during appropriate times.
